This week I was invited to my first conference outside of Java. Banjarmasin is the capital of South Kalimantan. Sometimes called the 'river city,' the Lok Baintan floating market is one of the best in Indonesia. From central Banjarmasin you should plan on setting out early, around 4 or 5 am. The boat ride to the market is just as visually stunning as the market. Many Banjarese still live along the river which is abuzz with activity each morning. On the way to the market you can see Banjarese going about their daily routines, women washing laundry, kids bathing, men fishing, and students being collected for school.
The market itself is full of color and a wide array of snacks to try. The vendors, nearly all women, come in their boats from sunrise, the market ending by 9 am.
