lawang sewu

First weekend in Indonesia calls for some local sightseeing via scooter; the best mode of transport for the crowded streets and hot weather. My new friend Andra and I visited Semarang's main claim to fame, Gedung Lawang Sewu. In Javanese the name translates to "a thousand doors."

Originally built as a railway station, the building was also used as a prison by the Japanese and now houses a famous ghost.

After Lawang Sewu we scooted over to Old Town, an area of Semarang with colonial buildings left by the Dutch. I'm told that lots of events happen here such as food festivals, music, etc. While we were walking through a vintage Vespa show was going on.
